Blackpool Council has been selected for the 2024/2025 Design Code Pathfinder programme. The programme, promoted by the central government, supports councils across the country in preparing and adopting design codes.
The Blackpool Design Code will guide how new buildings, streets, and spaces are developed in Blackpool so that they respect and celebrate the local identity, promote wellbeing and active lives, foster a fair and inclusive town, support the local economy, and embed sustainability and climate resilience at the centre of any design.
Blackpool Council has appointed a multidisciplinary team led by Maccreanor Lavington to develop the Design Code in conversation with the local communities and embed local perspectives.
As part of the engagement programme, we are offering a unique opportunity for three young researchers (18 to 25) to contribute to the development of the Design Code. You will support the design team in developing themes of Social and Environmental Sustainability by conducting semi-structured interviews with local people and contributing to defining approaches to be embedded into the Design Code.
If you would like to participate in the Focus Group, you can expect:
Your commitment: You will either conduct semi-structured interviews (10 to 20 minutes each) and transcribe notes for the Design Team (minimum 4) or support the design team with site documentation (i.e. taking pictures of local places and buildings). These activities can be conducted during public engagement on the street. You will also participate in a one-hour briefing and a one-hour debriefing to discuss findings and possible approaches. Your total time commitment will not exceed 8 hours and will be compensated at the National Living Wage. Activities can be organised between January and March 2025.
Your impact: The work of young researchers will help us better understand the priorities of young people in Blackpool and how they live in the town, which will inform the Design Code. The Design Code will not focus on any specific project but will set out the principles that will shape how Blackpool will look in the future and how it will become more resilient and inclusive.
How to apply: If you are interested, please apply following the link below. We encourage participation from people from all backgrounds, especially those less represented in the planning system. No prior experience is required; however, you must be a Blackpool resident. Please express your interest completing the form at the link below by the 1st of January.
